Radon

 Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas.

Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. The release of this radioactive gas enters the air you breathe, causing a potential health risk to you and your family. Radon gas can be found almost anywhere. It can get into any type of building and build up to high levels.

You cannot see radon and you cannot smell it or taste it, but it may be a problem in your home. This is because when you breathe air that contains radon, you increase your risk of getting lung cancer. The surgeon general has stated that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause among non-smokers. 

 Typically the air pressure inside your home is lower than the pressure in the soil around your home’s foundation. Due to this difference, your house acts like a vacuum, drawing radon gas in through foundation cracks and other openings of your home. The image to the right shows some of the potential pathways through which radon can make it's way into homes. 

 You should test for radon. Testing is the only way to find out about your home's radon level. Charcoal cannisters can be purchased to conduct a radon test but they are not tamper-proof and take longer to process than is typically required for a real estate transaction. The EPA, Surgeon General and The Center for Disease Control have all agreed that continued exposure to Radon gas can cause lung cancer. They suggest that homes should be tested for radon gas exposure and that all homes testing over 4 pCi/L should be mitigated. 

 If elevated levels are found, it is recommended that these levels be reduced. In most cases, this can be accomplished by having a radon mitigation system installed. Most of the time, such a system can be installed in a day or two, at a reasonable cost.
